Decentralized Precision Positioning: Running onocoy GNSS Services on Acurast

Zug, July 14, 2025 — We’re pleased to announce the start of an exploratory partnership between Acurast, world’s most decentralized compute network, and onocoy, the global, community-powered GNSS data-sharing network. Together, we bring innovative smartphone powered compute and high-precision positioning together to enhance performance and decentralization in groundbreaking ways.

In this first phase of our exploration, we will focus our research on how the validation of RTK correction data can be decentralized by offloading it to Acurast. Then we’ll find out if the decentralized nature of Acurast can help onocoy to scale the load balancing and ingestion/diffusion of NTRIP data streams, by leveraging the geographically distributed Acurast processors in order to minimize latency.

Acurast and onocoy: A perfect combination

Edge Infrastructure, Trusted Execution

  • onocoy’s collected GNSS (think GPS) correction data requires fast and verifiable validation to maintain trust and accuracy.
  • Acurast leverages smartphones equipped with Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), providing confidential computation and cryptographic attestation without relying on traditional servers.

Low-Latency, Local Processing

  • Precise GNSS positioning hinges on reducing round-trip delays between reference stations, validators, and receivers.
  • Acurast’s edge network can bring computation closer to where data originates, streamlining the communication between GPS station and the receiver and thus significantly enhancing the speed and responsiveness of onocoy’s system.

Community-Powered Scalability

  • Both onocoy and Acurast rely on globally distributed contributors: smartphone owners and GNSS station operators.
  • By combining these communities, the partnership aims to create a resilient, massively scalable and decentralized infrastructure for precision positioning that grows organically without centralized bottlenecks.

Aligned On Decentralization

  • Processing GNSS data in a decentralized manner supports onocoy’s vision of a completely decentralized high-precision positioning network.
  • Acurast’s experience in building modular DePIN services, including oracles, bridges, and distributed crawlers aligns perfectly with onocoy’s mission to democratize high-accuracy positioning.

By uniting onocoy’s decentralized GNSS network with Acurast’s decentralized compute power, we see an opportunity to pioneer a new class of real-time positioning applications: from next-generation robotics to AR experiences, all without a single data center in sight.

We look forward to co-designing this proof-of-concept and sharing our learnings with both communities.
